Summary:
This large Ming plate is painted with an enamel overglaze known as wu t’sai (‘five colours’). The Arabic calligraphy is expertly executed. This plate is classified as a ‘Swatow good’, denoting the Chinese ceramic exports of the 16th and 17th centuries (after the harbour city of Shantou, Guangdong, from where they were shipped).
