Summary:
Candi Pulo was one of the numerous elaborate brick shrines built by an esoteric Buddhist sect on the Padang Lawas plain. ‘Padang Lawas’, which means ‘wide plain’, lies between the two mountain ranges that run the length of Sumatra, and it is here that the huge statue of Adityavarman (opposite) was found. The cult seems to have practised a variant of Vajrayana Buddhism, and there are indications that it was allied to sects in Nepal and Sri Lanka.
